Zelensky Voices Optimism for Upcoming Talks with U.S., Russia

(MENAFN) Ukraine's leader voiced cautious optimism Saturday about impending trilateral negotiations while delivering pointed criticism of Washington's approach to the diplomatic process.

Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the Munich Security Conference in Germany, expressing measured expectations for the Geneva meetings scheduled for next week. "We truly hope that the trilateral meetings next week will be serious, substantive, and helpful for all of us," he remarked, according to his official website.

The Ukrainian president sharply rebuked American negotiators for what he characterized as an imbalanced focus during preliminary discussions. "The Americans often return to the topic of concessions -- and too often those concessions are discussed in the context only of Ukraine -- not Russia," Zelensky stated.

Two previous negotiating rounds between Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington occurred in late January and early February in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. While the parties achieved a significant prisoner swap, fundamental disputes over territorial control and ceasefire terms remained unresolved.

The forthcoming Geneva sessions are set for Tuesday and Wednesday. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky will head Russia's delegation.

Ukraine's chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, announced via Facebook that Kyiv has assembled a comprehensive team spanning military, political, and security portfolios for the critical talks.
